There is something deep within each of us that desires to know and to be able to control the future. The future can feel so frightening; like it’s a big black hole and we have no way of knowing what will come from it. The future is God’s way of reminding us that He alone is God and we are not. The future is an ever-present reminder of our need to depend on and trust in the Lord.
Yet our self-sufficient human nature strives to control what is coming in the future. We make many plans but it is the Lord who directs our steps. We have no guarantees about tomorrow’s circumstances, but we do have today to choose to entrust our lives to our faithful creator or to choose to try in vain to trust in the work of our hands.
The Bible is very clear on the sinfulness of turning to mediums and fortune tellers to try to determine what the future holds. These practices are detestable before the Lord (Deuteronomy 18) because they are a direct attempt to be God, instead of trusting in Him. In an attempt to know things only God knows, we resist submitting to His perfect will. Sadly many are turning to these occult practices in an effort to find peace and assurance, yet as they do so, they are moving further away from the only One who can offer all of us rest for our souls.
The Lord calls us to something so much greater:
We are invited to walk by faith and not by sight. We are given the opportunity to cast our worries on a loving and kind Savior who cares for us deeply. We can pray to our Heavenly Father who upholds the whole universe by His powerful word and who is able to fill us with a peace that is beyond understanding. As we live and make plans, may we put our hope in the certainty of God’s perfect purposes standing. For those who love Jesus, we can have great confidence that every detail has been planned out by God and even the hardest moments of life will be used for our ultimate good and His glory. The Lord will provide for our every need according to the riches of His grace.
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” (Psalm 143:8)
