“Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die:
Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.” (Proverbs 30:7-9)
God feeds us with the food that is needful for us.
Creation reminds us constantly how the Lord sees and cares about the many small details of our world. The birds of the air are fed, despite not storing anything away in barns. The flowers of the field continue to grow each year as they receive the light and water they need to grow.
We often think we know what we need and quickly forget that God is the One who knows what we need, how much we need and when we need it.
When we have too much, we will be tempted to forget about the Lord as we become self-sufficient. When we have too little, we will be tempted to take what doesn’t belong to us as we doubt the Lord’s kindness and provision.
God has all of our days written down in His book. He knows the number of hairs on our head. He knows the number of the grains of sand on all of the beaches of the world. He knows of all of the stars in the sky. Our all-wise God has a personal knowledge of each of our specific, individual circumstances and needs, and He will faithfully act accordingly.
We can seek Jesus first, knowing that our heavenly Father will always be faithful to provide. May our pride not deceive us into thinking it is by the strength of our hands that we have what we need. It is the Lord who gives every breath of air we breathe and He gives every ounce of energy we possess.
Because God knows every detail of our lives, He knows exactly what we need. Not one of our needs is hidden from His sight. We cannot see the whole picture of our life. In fact we only see a very small part of our life and therefore we cannot perceive what our true needs are. Jesus sees every detail of our life perfectly at all times; therefore He knows perfectly what we need each moment.
God is a loving and kind Heavenly Father who gives His children good gifts. In light of this beautiful reality, we can joyfully submit ourselves to Jesus with full assurance that He sees and cares for us perfectly.
In closing, here are a couple of questions we need to consider continually:
-Am I willing to admit that I don’t know what I need?
-Am I willing to lay down my pride with all my assumed needs, and joyfully submit to the God who will always provide exactly what I need at just the right time?
